A new palm book

Posted: 23 Feb 2008

Many members to the old site will recall member and nurseryman Kevin Williams appeal for information and photographs on Howea palms. Kevin was interested in putting together a book to honour the role that this palm has played both in horticulture and also the economies of the small South Pacific islands that supply most of the seed into the trade.

The 72 page soft cover colour book is now ready titled 'Seed to Elegance' and makes for interesting reading. It gives an account of the history of growing the palms on Norfolk Island for seed production and the role this palm has played in ornamental horticultre since Victorian times around the globe. I am still amazed at how many specimens of this lovely palm are produced and sold worldwide each year...amazing!

It also makes me wonder if there is a similar trade in seed of another highly ornamental palm Chamaedorea elegans which must be raised by the million every year to supply the demand for a good and reliable indoor palm,

Worth checking out the site Kevin has set up at www.kentiapalmbook.com
