Chilean Wine palms make TV!

This weeks episode of the BBC2 programme ’Around the World in 80 Gardens’, presented by Monty Don, was in South America with some super plants. The highlight was the visit to see Chilean Wine palms growing, (in the rain!), with a good few minutes of airtime devoted to showing Jubaea with some impressive specimens. The palms were being protected as their increasing rarity has been recognised.

A new palm book

Many members to the old site will recall member and nurseryman Kevin Williams appeal for information and photographs on Howea palms. Kevin was interested in putting together a book to honour the role that this palm has played both in horticulture and also the economies of the small South Pacific islands that supply most of the seed into the trade.

Giant palm tree puzzles botanists

Botanists have discovered a new species of giant self-destructing palm on the island of Madagascar. The tree, described as the nation’s largest palm species, is unlike anything else ever found on the island before, say scientists.

Noticed in the summer 2007 issue of the Southeastern Palms journal (USA) an intersting article on a new form of Musa basjoo called ’Upham Giant’ TM ... a trade marked form being micro propagated in the USA.

It's palm trees in Peckham as things start to hot up

Palm trees sway gently in the exhaust fumes while passing dogs steer clear of the yuccas’ spiky leaves. Not the sort of exotic vista you would normally expect on a visit to Peckham!
