Locals champion protection of the 'Cretan' Date Palm
Society member Julia Jones, President and founder of Flowers of Crete, an organisation dedicated to the conservation of the islands native plants has some sad news about the stands of Phoenix theophrastii.
I have re-produced here extracts from the latest Flowers of Crete newsletter plus some updates Julia has posted in the EPS forum.
The Cretan Date Palm, Phoenix theophrastii, is one of a handful of palm species native to Europe. It has a restricted distribution in its native homeland and is subject to pressures for land usage, hybridisation with other date palm species such as the widely planted Canary Island Date and now in danger from predation from the accidentally introduced Red Palm Weevil.
